What's Included

Shocks & Struts Replacement Services

🔧

Shock Absorber Replacement

Replacement of worn rear or front shock absorbers on all makes and models. Always replaced in axle pairs for balanced handling and braking performance.

🔧

Strut Replacement

Full strut replacement including the strut cartridge and housing. Struts are structural suspension components - replacement always includes a post-installation wheel alignment.

🔧

Strut Mount and Bearing Replacement

The strut mount bearing allows the strut to rotate during steering. Worn mounts cause knocking noises and steering feel issues. We replace them at the same time as the strut.

🔍

Coil Spring Inspection and Replacement

Cracked or sagging coil springs change ride height and alignment. We inspect springs during every suspension service and replace when they are damaged or broken.

🔧

Post-Replacement Wheel Alignment

Strut replacement changes the wheel's alignment angles. A four-wheel alignment after strut replacement is required to prevent uneven tire wear and restore proper handling.

🔍

Suspension Inspection

Full inspection of all suspension components - control arms, ball joints, tie rods, sway bar links, and bushings - while the vehicle is on the lift for shock or strut service.

Shocks, Struts, and Long Island Roads

The distinction between a shock and a strut matters when it comes to alignment. A shock is a damper only - changing it does not affect wheel geometry. A strut is part of the suspension structure and changing it does affect geometry, which is why a four-wheel alignment is required after strut replacement. We include alignment with every strut job because skipping it would mean billing you for a repair that leaves the tires wearing unevenly within months.

The bounce test - pushing on the front of the car and counting how many times it bounces - is a reasonable starting check. If the car bounces more than once or twice before settling, the shocks are worn. But mild wear at 60,000 to 80,000 miles is harder to detect that way. What you can catch on a lift is fluid streaking on the shock body (internal oil is leaking past the seal) and play in the strut mount bearing. Both are signs the component is past its useful life even if the bounce test is not conclusive.

Cupped tire wear deserves special mention. A wavy, scalloped pattern across the tire tread is a direct result of a shock or strut that was not controlling the wheel's vertical movement properly. By the time you see that pattern, the tire has already been unevenly worn and may need to be replaced. Catching worn shocks early - before the tire wear sets in - means one service instead of two. If you are on a vehicle with 70,000 or more miles in Nassau County and the ride feels different than it did, call (516) 681-0122 and we will put it on the lift and check it.

FAQ
Shocks & Struts Replacement FAQ
How do I know if my shocks or struts are worn out?
The clearest signs are excessive bouncing after hitting a bump - if the car keeps bouncing more than once or twice before settling, the shocks are worn. Other signs include nose-diving under hard braking, the car leaning heavily in corners, cupped or scalloped tire wear (a wavy pattern across the tread), a rattling or clunking noise over bumps, and visible fluid leaks on the shock body. Mild wear is harder to detect without putting the car on a lift and checking for fluid leaks and play in the mount bearings.
Should I replace shocks in pairs?
Yes. When one shock or strut is worn, the one on the opposite side has the same mileage and wear history. Replacing only one side creates an imbalance - the new side will handle and absorb bumps differently than the old side, which affects handling in emergency situations. We always replace in axle pairs - both fronts together or both rears together.
Do I need an alignment after strut replacement?
Yes, always after strut replacement. A strut is a structural part of the suspension - it determines the wheel's camber and caster angles. When you remove and replace a strut, those angles shift. Driving on an out-of-alignment vehicle after strut replacement will cause uneven tire wear and handling problems. Alignment is a required follow-up to strut replacement, not an optional add-on.
What is the difference between a shock and a strut?
A shock absorber is a standalone hydraulic damper - it controls bounce but is not a structural part of the suspension. A strut combines a shock absorber with a structural mount that the wheel and spring assembly connects to. Struts are part of the suspension geometry. Replacing a strut affects wheel alignment; replacing a shock does not. Most modern front-wheel-drive vehicles use struts in the front and shocks in the rear, though configurations vary by make and model.
How long does strut replacement take?
Strut replacement typically takes 2 to 4 hours for an axle pair (both fronts or both rears), plus the time for a wheel alignment afterward. The total service time including alignment is usually 3 to 5 hours. Many vehicles can be done same-day when parts are in stock. Call (516) 681-0122 to check availability for your vehicle.
