Hybrid vehicles are not fundamentally different from conventional vehicles in terms of most maintenance, but the differences that do exist are significant. Hybrid brake systems use regenerative braking as the primary stopping mechanism, with friction brakes as a secondary system. This means friction brake pads and rotors are used far less than on a conventional vehicle. The result is that brake components often corrode and seize before they wear out. The opposite of a conventional vehicle. We inspect hybrid brake systems with this in mind and check for rotor surface rust and caliper piston condition, not just pad thickness.
Hybrid high-voltage battery packs typically last 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more, but their health can degrade in Nassau County's climate if cells are not balanced properly. We perform hybrid battery health assessments that measure individual cell capacity and overall pack state of health, not just a warning light check. For routine maintenance, hybrids use the same service intervals as conventional vehicles for oil changes and filters. We use the manufacturer-specified oil weight, typically 0W-20 for most Toyota and Honda hybrid applications, using premium Mobil synthetic oil. Hybrid cooling systems also have an additional dedicated high-voltage battery cooling circuit that should be inspected periodically. If your hybrid is coming up on a NYS inspection, bring it to us.
