Is the N14 timing chain issue urgent?
Yes. The N14 turbocharged engine in 2007-2012 Cooper S has a documented timing chain tensioner failure that is catastrophic on this interference engine. If the chain fails, the engine is internally damaged. If you own an early Cooper S and the timing chain has never been inspected or replaced, this is a priority service - not something to defer.
Why does my MINI burn oil between changes?
Both N14 and N18 turbocharged MINI engines consume more oil between changes than most modern vehicles. This is a known characteristic of the design - it is not necessarily a failure, but it must be managed. Check the oil level every 2,000-3,000 miles between service visits. Running low on oil damages the turbocharger and the engine - it happens faster on turbocharged MINI engines than owners expect.
